I think I'd rather mess the aftermarket tachometer than a 40 year old circuit board.

Where have you taken the feed for the light from, just use the original one then when you 'turn it down ' the tacho will dim accordingly. The switch simply reduces the voltage down.

Tachometer lighting wire is connected to the blue/grey wire on the 14 pin connector.
I will test if the dimmer has any effect tomorrow.

I can confirm that the dimmer switch does indeed work in the current configuration! That was a nice surprise.

Not sure if you can tell in the pictures? Definitely noticeable in person.

The clock and speedometer lights are very dull in comparison. That may be a future upgrade if it's not to much of a pain?
